Destination Guide: Anguilla

Anguilla is my absolute favorite little Caribbean island. It is an absolute paradise in the middle of the Caribbean. Anguilla is a British overseas territory located north of St. Maarten and it is a beach lovers paradise. The island itself is 16 miles long and 3 miles wide. It boasts 33 white sand beaches and the bluest waters you will ever see. While there are plenty of activities, be prepared to not want to leave your beach chair.

HOW TO GET THERE

Anguilla is a short flight and a ferry away. Catch a plane to St. Maarten (SXM). Upon arrival, your hotel will likely provide a taxi from the airport to nearby Marigot, where you will take a short ferry to Anguilla

You can also take a direct flight from Miami. Depending on your origin city, connecting to this early morning flight can be challenging. But, it is worth keeping in mind for your trip!

WHEN TO GO

Caribbean islands have rainy and dry seasons. Although they don’t lose their luster during the rainy season, it does prevent beach activities and the ability to truly enjoy the island. The peak travel season in Anguilla is December to April. I visited in May and after talking with locals, I found many restaurants were beginning to shut down restaurants for the hurricane and rainy season.

WHERE TO STAY

Belmond Cap Juluca: this newly renovated resort will make you think you stumbled upon a European paradise. Cap Juluca hosts a multitude of white, ocean front villas, many with private pools. The beach makes a U shape, leaving visitors with a sense of privacy and luxury.

Four Seasons: Breathtaking in shape and size, the resort previously known as The Viceroy maintains its luxury and beauty. Infinity pools overlooking the clear blue waters provide an epic sunset cocktail hour. Resort accommodations include expansive balconies, rooms and ocean front views.

Malliouhana: this chic resort is an interior designers paradise. From the sparkling floor tiles to abstract art and antiquated scuba gear, the Malliouhana sends a classic Caribbean vibe. You can venture down the rocky stairs to one of two beaches or spend time in the infinity pools.

WHERE TO EAT

Mango’s: a casual beach restaurant offering exceptional sunset views. The menu boasts your Caribbean clasics from snapper to lobster and everything in between.

Straw Hat: A place so good, you just might have to come back twice. And maybe even buy shirts to commemorate your love for the restaurant. (Ok, we definitely did this). My must haves on this menu are the Straw Hat Spring Rolls and Mahi Mahi Tacos.

Pimms: An elegant, scenic, open air restaurant. Ask for a table along the restaurant’s edge to make the most of the view of Maunday’s Bay. If you can catch a quiet moment during dinner, soak in the sound of the water lightly hitting the rocks just below. I’m very fond of chicken dishes, so I couldn’t pass up the Chicken Aloe Vera. (I know I am receiving eye rolls from all of you fresh seafood people). Other staples include Anguillian Paella Valencia and Poached Grouper Fillet with Shellfish Nage.

Cobá: A luxury restaurant with breathtaking ocean views, Cobá has a unique menu that allows you to be the maker. Choose your seafood or meat, compliment it with a veggie & starch, and finish it off with one of the chefs 8 sauces.
